India Holds Firm in US Trade Talks
Officials in New Delhi may contemplate allowing a slightly larger volume of U.S. rice imports, as such a move would not significantly affect local cultivators. This consideration was raised while discussing the latest phase of trade discussions between the two nations.
Nevertheless, the Indian administration “remains unequivocal on agriculture,” stressing that farming is directly connected to rural livelihoods and national food security. For this reason, authorities insist it cannot be exposed to overseas competition within the framework of a trade agreement, according to the sources.
India has expressed readiness to make pledges in areas such as defense, renewable energy, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which are regarded as strategic and high-value sectors.
A delegation headed by Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Rick Switzer traveled to India last week for negotiations. This marked the second visit by American officials since Washington enforced a 25% retaliatory tariff along with an additional 25% duty on New Delhi for purchasing Russian oil.
India has rejected reproach regarding its imports of Russian crude, asserting that its energy strategy is guided by “national interest.” At the same time, the country continues to broaden its commercial ties with the United States.
In November, New Delhi revealed a significant agreement to procure liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the U.S., signaling its willingness to expand cooperation in energy despite tensions over agricultural trade.
