Merz Begins First Official Visit to India

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in India on Monday for an official trip, according to officials.

Merz landed in Ahmedabad, a major city in Gujarat state, and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced on X.

“India and Germany are celebrating 75 years of India-Germany diplomatic ties and 25 years of the India-Germany strategic partnership,” Jaiswal noted, adding that the meeting with Modi “will further strengthen India-Germany partnership.”

This marks Merz’s first official visit to India, taking place from January 12–13, as outlined in a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The two-day trip will center on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, technology, education, skills development, and mobility, while also broadening collaboration in defense and security, the statement emphasized.
