Rubio Holds Talks with Indian, S. Korean Counterparts

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Tuesday with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to discuss formalizing collaboration on the exploration, mining, and processing of critical minerals, according to the State Department.

The meeting came ahead of the first-ever Critical Minerals Ministerial, which Rubio is scheduled to host at the State Department on Wednesday. Delegations from over 50 countries are expected to participate, focusing on efforts to strengthen and diversify global critical minerals supply chains.

During their discussion, Rubio and Jaishankar welcomed a recent trade agreement between the United States and India. They emphasized the importance of “working together to unlock new economic opportunities and advance our shared energy security goals,” as stated by the State Department.

The two officials also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening both bilateral and multilateral cooperation through the Quad framework, which includes the US, Japan, Australia, and India. They noted that a prosperous Indo-Pacific region remains essential to advancing shared interests.

Rubio also held a separete meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun ahead of the summit. The talks focused on strengthening the US-South Korea alliance and enhancing cooperation on critical minerals. Rubio expressed appreciation for South Korea’s leadership in “building secure, resilient and diversified critical minerals supply chains,” according to official remarks.

The discussions additionally aimed to advance the bilateral relationship through a forward-looking agenda, building on recent summits between former President Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Washington and Gyeongju.
