India Advances Plans to Build Space Station by 2035
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is simultaneously developing 80 satellites designed to support its Gaganyaan human spaceflight initiative, Programme Director Imtiyaz Ahmed revealed to a news agency Monday. These orbital assets will transmit vital mission data from Gaganyaan astronauts back to ground control, Ahmed confirmed to the agency.
ISRO's current portfolio—spanning earth observation operations, the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NVS), the Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS), Gaganyaan, and the Venus Orbiter Mission—represents a comprehensive strategy to amplify the country's presence across space science, planetary exploration, and practical applications.
The organization has set 2035 as its deadline for completing a functional orbital station. The inaugural module among five planned components will reach orbit by 2028, establishing India's permanent foothold beyond Earth's atmosphere.
The Gaganyaan Mission—targeting a three-astronaut, three-day orbital journey with safe return—is slated for 2027 launch, Chairman V. Narayanan announced in January.
Three unmanned test flights will precede the crewed mission, Narayanan specified.
New Delhi is simultaneously exploring the viability of deploying physical data centers in low Earth orbit. ISRO is assessing space-based data processing as part of building futuristic technologies, Narayanan noted.
December marked a milestone when India deployed its heaviest commercial communications payload to date. ISRO's Baahubali rocket successfully delivered the BlueBird Block-2 communications satellite for US-based AST SpaceMobile into low Earth orbit.
ISRO projects tripling annual spacecraft manufacturing capacity within three years while expanding the nation's space economy from its current $8.2 billion valuation to $44 billion by 2033.
