India Mine Explosion Death Toll Surpasses Thirty
The deadly Feb. 5 detonation ripped through an underground mining operation at Mynsyngat-Thangsko in East Jaintia Hills district, located approximately 70 kilometers east of state capital Shillong.
Regional authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the catastrophic incident.
Meghalaya ranks among India's most mineral-abundant states, holding roughly 640 million tonnes of coal deposits, government data shows.
Despite a 2014 prohibition by India's environmental court, the National Green Tribunal, against unscientific extraction practices in the region, activists report that unlawful coal mining operations persist throughout the state.
According to experts, local operators continue illegally harvesting coal through hazardous "rat-hole" mining techniques—a process involving excavation into hillsides followed by the creation of dangerously narrow horizontal shafts to access coal seams.
